Going Old School on Steam
Over the Christmas holidays, I have downloaded a number of great, older titles from Steam to bring back parts of my childhood. With time off, I’ve been able to play through Kings Quest 5, 6 and 7, Roller Coaster Tycoon – also on the iPad, more of that to come – and Pharaoh + Cleopatra! It’s been wonderful, and highlights why I enjoy PC gaming so much.
To be honest, my PC sucks pretty badly, so the only games I can actually play are ones that were released many years ago. Yet, I find those to be the most fun and entertaining, and it also brings memories of my childhood flooding back. All these titles are available on Steam, but I’ll break down each on their own and why I enjoy them so much.
Pharaoh and Cleopatra
Everyone is familiar with city building games, and one of the most popular in the 90s was Caesar 3. I couldn’t get into that title too much, but thankfully a more exciting – and arguably better – game came along: Pharaoh, and the expansion, Cleopatra.
In this game, you are tasked with creating a city and providing for citizens. It begins with giving them a source of food and jobs to make an income, and continues through providing them specific necessities to better their ways of life. As they get more luxuries, their personal demands increase. This means providing better services, but also more taxes and potentially more income. Appease the gods, fish on the Nile, and protect your city from invading armies. You can do all of that in this game!
Roller Coaster Tycoon
Roller Coaster Tycoon has come full circle, going through some pretty low, lows to going back to what made the game so incredible! With the release on Steam – coupled with a release on the iPad – this game is back and better than ever.
Again, we are essentially talking about a city builder platform, but with amusement parks instead. Get those coasters up and running, but don’t forget those kiddie rides for younger and less trill driven guests. You’ll also want to maintain your parks cleanliness, make sure rides continue to operate, and don’t let vandals destroy your benches and trash bins. It can be a difficult game, but it’s so fun! If nothing else, you can build some WICKED coasters!
Kings Quest
What can I say about King’s Quest? It is easily one of the best point and click adventure titles ever created, and the stories are phenomenal. The puzzles now seem very easy, but if I was coming at them without any prior knowledge, I’m sure I would enjoy these games even more.
If you have played the new King’s Quest adventure games that were released on Console and PC last year, you should grab the complete collection on Steam and dive into the earlier titles. Although I’m not a huge fan of 1-4 and 8, I think 5, 6, and 7 are great adventures that you should play!
