New Super Lucky’s Tale Review

Review by Adam Roffel. New Super Lucky’s Tale on the Nintendo Switch is not a AAA priced title, and for 39.99, you get a lot for what you pay. Check out my review of the game.

With many worlds to explore, and a number of levels within each world, there is plenty to do and lots to keep you going for a good 8-10 hours. In each level, you will work to obtain 4 leaf clovers by collecting all the letters in Lucky’s name, obtaining 300 coins, completing a mystery objective, and completing the main objective for the level.

For the most part, it works well – although I never felt that these clovers were hard to obtain, every once in a while, the developers throw a particularly challenging level at you.

The controls themselves are simple enough for a young child to play, but still provide depth to the game play. Lucky has a standard spin attack, can dig under ground to find treasure, and can perform double jumps. It’s all very easy, and unlike other games that bog you down in special moves, this one keeps it plain and simple.

The game does swap between an ‘open world’, explorable environments to 2D side scrolling levels. The change of pace throughout is nice, although it sometimes can be hard to get into a rhythm with a specific control scheme when jumping back and forth. Thankfully, the camera issues present in the Xbox One version are gone here, as players are given a free roaming camera, making some of these difficult jumps much easier!

The biggest question I have received is, how much does this differ from the Xbox One version. I’ll begin by saying this is the premier edition of this title, so if you have a Nintendo Switch, this is the version to purchase. There are so many quality of life improvements, most importantly the free roaming camera. Everything feels just a bit tighter as well.

The development team has also reworked a number of levels, making them a bit tighter and more fluid than levels in the original. Some levels got complete makeovers, including new level names, so don’t expect an Xbox walkthrough to help you in most situations. This version also includes brand new content, and the DLC content that was available for extra on Xbox One!

New Super Lucky’s Tale is easily a game that every Nintendo Switch owner needs to have their hands on. It’s a fantastic mix of unique puzzles, great colourful worlds, and characters you will instantly begin to love. Throw in a number of different costumes for Lucky, and you have one of the best platform titles currently available on the Nintendo Switch!
