How to Approach LEGO Video Games

LEGO video games can be the most frustrating thing to play, especially for those not familiar with how the games work. The number of people who don’t understand you cannot get everything in your first play through of a level astounds me. But, with no frame of reference, I guess it’s not that crazy!

I’ve been working my way through the LEGO Harry Potter Collection on the PS4 recently, and realized just how difficult it is to get everything in a LEGO game. And for those trophy and achievement hunters, it’s important! I’ll use the Harry Potter games as a frame of reference.

In each Harry Potter level, there are a number of things to collect. Whether its find the “Student in Peril”, collecting all 4 House badges, or getting the True Wizard gold brick – for collecting enough studs in each level – there is lots to do, and they cannot all be done on the first play through.

The reason for writing this article arose from me seeing my wife wander aimlessly around Diagon Alley trying to find the last House crest. Finally I just had to scream, “YOU NEED TO COME BACK IN FREE PLAY WHEN YOU’VE UNLOCKED MORE CHARACTERS AND SPELLS.” The idea of having to play it twice didn’t really appeal to my wife, but it is a staple of the LEGO games, and one that you need to understand going in.

Let me explain how I tackle LEGO games.

My primary objective on my initial play through is to enjoy the story and the environments, never staying in a place too long as to get tired of it. Just move through the story. Since you already know you will be coming back a second time, there are only minor reasons to attempt at getting the True Wizard gold brick on your first attempt. With more spells and characters – not to mention the ability to find x2, x4, x8 red bricks that will multiply your studs – you will easily be able to get the True Wizard on your second time through.

For some, getting as many studs early is important because they like to unlock buyable characters as they go. If that is you, my approach doesn’t work. But take the time to enjoy the story, environments, and puzzles. Don’t frustrate yourself trying to figure out something you might never be able to accomplish at that time. That is a sure fire way of making you give up early.

And no one should EVER give up on LEGO!
