A Tactical Take on Metal Slug

Metal Slug Tactics is out today on all consoles and PC. Yesterday, we received a review code of the game for the Xbox Series. Our review isn’t ready yet but here our first impressions of the game.

Metal Slug Tactics is out now for the Xbox Series X/S. The game is available on Game Pass, however we got to check it out a day early.

Usually, Metal Slug is an action game but this is a tactical take on the series. Graphically it looks a lot like the other games: cartoon-like graphics with military characters. Gameplay wise? It has the feel of a Metal Slug game in a tactical setting.

The characters in this game attack with guns and other weapons. You can even call in an airstrike! The characters move via a grid-think Final Fantasy Tactics. The menu system for attacking is more complicated than FFT though. And while the game gives you a tutorial on how to move and attack, you may have trouble reading through it.

The text during battles is extremely small and hard to read. There is no way to increase the size of the text either. Meanwhile the text is bigger outside of battle. Hopefully there will be an update to the game that increases the text size because this is definitely the game’s biggest issue right now.

Even with its complicated attacking and text issues, Metal Slug Tactics is a fun game so far. Once you get the hang of the controls, the battles move fast and look really neat. The battles also get harder as you progress but in defeat, you go back to your base and unlock new things that’ll help you with the battles.

We are enjoying Metal Slug Tactics and will offer our final analysis of the game as soon as possible. Stay tuned!

Thank you to Tinsley PR for providing a digital code. Metal Slug Tactics is out now.
