YO-KAI Watch 2 – Episode 1.3 Review in Progress
Over the last week, we have been slowly breaking down YO-KAI Watch 2, and been doing so alongside videos from Abdallah, who I’ve dubbed the YO-KAI King. At this point in our review in progress, we have deviated from what Abdallah has been doing in his play through. You can find his third episode embedded below, and his entire playlist can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/ z5xxv4y.
In this review, we will be debunking the myth that there isn’t a whole lot to do in YO-KAI Watch 2, and that most of the game has you retreading old stomping grounds that we got in YO-KAI Watch 1.
Same Map, New Surprises
As we stated previously, YO-KAI Watch 2 begins right after the original ends, so not much has changed in Nate’s hometown. The districts are still pretty much all the same, and the buildings you explore won’t differ much from what you already know.
That being said, there have been new additions and areas to explore in YO-KAI Watch 2 and since it has been so long since I played the original, nothing felt overly familiar. Some have argued that this is a cheap cop-out from Level-5, that they are just rehashing old areas for more profit. There is so much that poor reviewers are not talking about, which could be because they never made it that far in the game.
There are plenty of new areas to explore in YO-KAI Watch 2, including Harrisville where Nate’s grandma lives; you will also go back in time to explore various areas of the game, but from a 1950s perspective, which also changes things up quite a bit.
Yes, there are some retreaded areas, but with so many new areas to explore, I think it’s perfectly acceptable and shouldn’t be used a negative against the games final score.
Item Collection, Fusing, and More!
If the main story isn’t gripping you for long periods of time, step away and explore your surroundings. There are items everywhere for you to collect, some that are one time use items, and some that can be fused. Below is Abdallah’s video walk through that explore YO-KAI Fusing.
Fusing items with YO-KAI can be experimental, but the affects can be outstanding. The goal, obviously, is to create more powerful YO-KAI and fusion is a good way to do this. Many great fusion items can be found when you trade in bugs, so make sure to save your bugs, and save the points you get for trading them in.
Again, outside of doing this mandatory quest early on, YO-KAI fusion really does become a fairly optional en-devour. However, if you want, you could lose hours working on fusion combinations with different YO-KAI; these hours blow by too, as it never feels like a slog. Finding that perfect combination is exhilarating, making the hours of work so worth it.
Lottery, Fishing, Favours
There is so many other, optional things to do in YO-KAI Watch 2, and to save time, I’m only going to mention a few more of them. If you’ve always wanted to play the Lottery, but never wanted to waste your own money, doing it in YO-KAI Watch 2 is great! Over the first few hours of the game, you will no doubt find numerous lottery tickets. These can be brought to the Candy Store in Breezy Hills to be redeemed for prizes. Off the top, 50 prizes will be available, but if you wait a number of in game hours, these prize will begin to be unavailable. Like a real lottery, there is a certain amount of luck to getting one of the top 10 items, but you can’t win without playing. At least in this lottery, you can wait for lesser prizes to become unavailable to increase your odds at a great item!
Fishing is also a great way to waste some time in YO-KAI Watch 2, and like bugs, these items can be traded in for points which can get you EXPOrbs or fusion items. Trying to catch all the fish in the game – both common and rare variants – will take some time; however, if you are a competitionist, it is a must!
And of course, you can do a number of favours for people all over the world of YO-KAI Watch 2. These favours, when completed, will give you experience, money, and often an item. These favours are completely worth doing as the 50 experience you get from a favour – depending on the amount of time you spend completing it – is a much faster way to level up YO-KAI early on; at this time, battles are often only rewarding you with 3-10 experience at a time.
Moving on…
We will continue exploring the world of YO-KAI Watch 2, but to do justice, we really need to spend more time than we already have. So many reviewers have slapped crappy, uneducated opinions for the masses to read. We don’t want to do that. As of right now, however, YO-KAI Watch 2 is scoring a respectable 9.0/10! If you liked the original, just go grab number 2. It is completely worth it!
