Dota and LOL compared

League of Legends and Dota 2 games have been at the top of eSports for some time.. Despite the obvious similarities between these games, there are fundamental differences between them. In this article, we will talk about the main differences.

Lack of comprehensive knowledge of the internal mechanisms of League of Legends and Dota 2 can make it difficult to understand each of these games.

Dota 2 and LoL have some common features, which is quite natural: both of these games are multiplayer online combat arenas (MOBA), created on the basis of the same modification – a custom card for WarCraft III, which was called Defense of the Ancients or Dota.

Valve and Riot Games used this modification to create their own games based on the same ideas and values. At the same time, the developers have chosen several different directions for the development of their games.

Riot decided to focus on creating a game that would attract people in terms of graphics. Mastering the basics of LoL is not difficult, but mastering this game is not easy. Valve wanted to create a much more strategic game. League of Legends can be perceived as a somewhat diluted and simplified version of Dota 2.

What is the similarity between these games?

The first thing that should be said is that both of these games are very famous esports disciplines. People are constantly involved in watching live streams on Youtube or Twitch and betting on these games is very rampant. If you compare Dota 2 bets opportunities in 2020 to the one in LoL there are way more possibilities to earn on the former than the latter. Hence in this regard, Dota is outplaying LoL.

Both LoL and Dota 2 are played by teams of five people who play on the same map. The overall view of the map in both games is roughly the same: the map contains the upper, lower and middle lines and the forest. The games use different “skins” of characters, but these differences are purely aesthetic.

To win the battle, the team needs to destroy the main base of the opponent. In LoL, such bases are called Nexus, and in Dota 2 – Ancient Fortress.

The battle begins with a laning phase. Over a period of time, participants in both games practice “pharma” (kill minions and creeps) to obtain experience points (XP) and gold. Experience points and gold are used to raise the levels of heroes and champions, which must be made strong enough to attack the enemy base and destroy it.

Some of the more than a hundred characters in both games are strikingly similar to each other. These characters include Ursa and Warwick, Drow Ranger and Ashe, Winter Wyvern, and Anivia. Despite the outward resemblance, these characters still play different roles and have different abilities.

Throughout the laning stage in Dota 2, heroes can stay on their lines thanks to couriers. The animal courier brings the hero, located at any point of the map, bought items. When reaching the three-minute mark, the courier has the ability to fly, so the hero gets items even faster.

There are no couriers in LoL, so to purchase the right items, the champions have to go back to their fountain (revival base). It is at the fountain that is the only bench on the map LoL Summoner’s Rift. At the bottom of the Dota 2 card, there are three benches: main, additional, and secret

There are also significant differences in the mechanics of the games under consideration that make them perceive these games differently. In LoL, the champion turns and moves instantly. In Dota 2, the player who changes the direction of the character must wait until the character turns.

Gold and experience points are important in both LoL and Dota 2, but in Dota 2 they are reliable and unreliable. Reliable gold represents all the rewards received for the destruction of heroes, Roshan, and couriers and the application of Hand of Midas (the object in which the user receives gold). Unreliable gold is acquired as a result of the destruction of creeps and monsters and at the beginning of the battle.

In the event of a player’s death, a death timer is triggered in both games, the duration of which depends on the length of the game. In Dota 2, players can use the redemption feature, which allows them to instantly re-emerge for a fee (in addition, in the event of a death in Dota 2, the player loses some of their gold).

There are runes at certain positions of the Dota 2 card. Runes are special amplifiers and are divided into two categories: runes of wealth provide additional gold, and strengthening runes for a short time gives the characters different buffs and effects. The runes can be stored in bottles and used during battles between teams.

Both games have scaling options (the speed of the champion or team gain compared to the average), but they are used in a variety of ways. In LoL, scaling occurs gradually: the character becomes stronger as the level of the player increases to the peak compared to other champions; after that, the character’s characteristics begin to deteriorate.

In Dota 2, teams of a certain composition have a peak of rocking. At this point, the team must either win or take the risk of deteriorating characteristics and defeat in the battle. Knowing this, before the peak of the squabbling, teams play in a defensive manner.

In League of Legends, players have the option of using the caller’s spell for teleportation to move the characters to their tower, allied minions, or totem. In addition, LoL provides the ability to teleport to the base with the help of the return function (the ability to teleport). In Dota 2, this is a little different: for teleportation to allied buildings, players use the Town Portal Scroll item, which can be bought.

In LoL, the destruction of the team inhibitor (a building that prevents the appearance of super minions and super-pins) causes super minions to appear within five minutes – until the inhibitor is restored. In this respect, Dota 2 is different from LoL: if a similar building (barracks) is destroyed, it is not restored.

LoL and Dota 2: the main differences not related to gameplay

Before the Battle of LoL, players can select two callers that provide them with different skills available for use during the game. These can be jump spells (teleportation for several meters), barrier (champion protection), ignition (burning of the enemy champion for five seconds), etc.

Typically, caller spells are distributed according to player roles. The spell of the punishment, aimed exclusively at monsters or enemy minions, always uses a jangler. In Dota 2, there are no such spells: decisions made during the battle are more affected by the role to which the player eventually comes.

In LoL, the role of the player is defined before the start of the battle, and this is a very different game from Dota 2, where the role of the players has much more flexibility. Most heroes can play multiple roles, so teams can change their lineup in the middle of the game.

LoL has five main roles: ADC (hero, causing major physical damage), top, jangler, mid, and support. There are many other roles in Dota 2. Among the main roles in Dota 2 are carry, initiator, jungle, support, tank, nuker, pusher, and escapade. Since there are only five champions in the team who can play nine different roles, each battle in Dota 2 is unique.

Support class heroes are used in the games under consideration in a variety of ways. In Dota 2, they actively play and attack the enemy, while in LoL such heroes are used mainly to support heroes of the class ADC.

League of Legends players has four skills: three basic and one “ult” skill, which can be used after reaching the sixth level. In this respect, LoL is different from Dota 2, where players can use a much larger number of skills. This greatly complicates the game: the hero Invoker, who has fourteen skills, is considered one of the most difficult to control characters in any battle.

In addition, another important difference to Dota 2 is the use of talent that was added to this game not so long ago (in December 2017). Talents are unique characteristics of each character, which are selected when reaching each fifth level (starting from the tenth level).

Talents allow you to increase the attributes of the hero with the help of buffs or get extra gold or experience points. In addition, talents can be used to enhance the abilities of the characters, which gives the game even more dynamism. When you raise the level of characters in LoL, you can only develop their skills by adding points to them.

Conclusion

To place profitable bets on LoL and Dota 2, it is important to understand the differences between these games. As detailed in this article, a general understanding of the rules of games in the genre of MOBA can not replace deep knowledge in this area. Therefore, it is important to understand the differences between the games in question, otherwise betting on Dota 2 or LoL will be difficult for you.
