YO-KAI Watch 2 Episode 1 Review in Progress
We are big YO-KAI fans at GamesReviews.com, but recently we met – virtually – an even bigger fan who goes by Abdallah. Abdallah helped us promote our YO-KAI Watch 2 launch party contest last week, and through our conversations, we thought we would team up to post some really great YO-KAI Watch content for all our readers.
Our review will be spread over a number of articles, each corresponding to one or 2 thirty minute walkthroughs from Abdallah himself. You can find his entire walkthrough list here. We have embedded his first video down below.
You can also follow Abdallah’s twitter here.
If you’ve played any of these ‘collect them all’ video games in the past, the first 30 minutes of YO-KAI Watch 2 – won’t be groundbreaking. We set the story up, we figure out how to play, and we are let loose on the world of YO-KAI! If you haven’t played YO-KAI 1, don’t fret as it really has no major baring on YO-KAI Watch 2. All the introductory tutorials are present in the second title, and according to myself – and the superior YO-KAI Master Abdallah – the second title is leaps and bounds better than the first.
The story opens with Nate laying in bed, seemingly in a deep sleep with his YO-KAI watch pulsing. Above him are two antagonists, with a sole goal to eliminate all YO-KAI watches. If getting the watches was as easy as taking Nate’s, their task doesn’t seem that hard.
Once the cut scene pulls away and we are left with a more in-game view, the visuals are what pop out right away. I would argue that YO-KAI 1 was one of the better looking games to date on the 3DS, and YO-KAI Watch 2 simply builds off that already established platform.
You’ll never get lost in YO-KAI Watch 2, as the game guides you along nicely using an indicator on the bottom of the screen. “Talk to Mom,” or other such messages will flash on the bottom of the screen, indicating what action you should perform next. As you progress through the game, you are not as limited as you are early on, so you’ll have ample time to do whatever you really want. When you need – or want – to continue along in the story, just follow your quest line. When your handy note disappears off screen, just look around the map for a pin, indicating your next destination.
Level-5 slowly begins to add layers of depth to YO-KAI Watch 2. Even before your first official battle, you’ll learn a number of things that are important for progressing in YO-KAI Watch 2. The first thing on the list: bug catching.
This feature in the game really highlights the importance of actually using your stylus. Many 3DS games can be played purely with the buttons, and relying very little on interactions on the bottom screen. Even when they infrequently pop up in other titles, simply using your finger will suffice. This is NOT the case for YO-KAI Watch which is stylus heavy. Get use to either playing while holding, or having easy access to, your stylus. It will be your best friend during your adventure.
Catching bugs is very simple. Simply find an area where bugs exist, enter a zoomed in picture of that area, and use your stylus (recommended, especially later when trying to track YO-KAI) or the circle pad to move your cursor over the bug. Then press ‘A’ and hope for the best!
We will be exploring more of what we saw in this first episode from Abdallah, but will save that for next time. Stay tuned!
