More Thoughts From Me #84: Can You Dig It?
Move over Shovel Knight! There’s only one true digging game and its based in Steamworld. Ok, so Shovel Knight is cool too. And they have their own amiibo figures. And…whatever. I still think Steamworld Dig is cooler. Rusty would totally beat up Shovel Knight if those two characters were in Smash Bros (please Nintendo?). And so its great that there is a Streamworld Dig 2 with Rusty…wait a second. That isn’t Rusty! What’s going on here?! Lets take a look at Steamworld Dig 2.
Steamworld Dig 2 doesn’t star Rusty. Let me repeat that: Steamworld Dig 2 doesn’t star Rusty! I mean, why is this happening?! What’s going on!?
Well, you see, Rusty has gone missing. And so a new protagonist, Dorothy, is the star of Steamworld Dig 2. Worry not because she is just as awesome as Rusty. Maybe more so. I haven’t played the game yet. I’m only going by footage!
But the important thing to know here is that there is digging in Steamworld Dig 2. There is so much digging. You may even get tired of digging. Wait. No, you absolutely won’t.
Why? Steamworld Dig 2 is even bigger than the first game. That means more areas to find, more bosses, enemies, loot to grab, and an even bigger town to visit. It looks like everything has been upgraded in Steamworld Dig 2.
The upgrade, of course, means the graphics look better too. Steamworld Dig 2 is appearing, at first, just on the Nintendo Switch. The graphics I’ve seen are drool worthy. The characters, the backgrounds, everything has been taken to the next level. Image & Form, the developers of everything Steamworld, look to have put a lot of time and energy and thought and whatever else into this game.
And the game is coming out on September 21st!!! To say I’m excited may be an understatement. Of course, there is always the slim chance that this game will disappoint. I mean, hyped much right? I hope to get my gruby hands on a review copy and let you know whether or not Steamworld Dig 2 is either A) As good as the first game B) better than the first game or C) A huge disapointment. What was Image & Form thinking?
I kind of doubt that last one will happen but you always have to leave yourself open to all possiblities. When I get the game, whenever that is, I will try my best to put aside my obvious Steamworld fanboyism (full discoursure: I wrote some poems about Steamworld Heist) and look at the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Steamworld Dig 2.
Will Steamworld Dig 2 live up to the hype? Time will tell. Time (and digging) will tell.
Next week: More thoughts on ARMS as I go hands on (haha) with the full game!
More Thoughts From Me is an opinion column. The thoughts expressed here are mine and mine alone. I think I’m going to go play the orignal Steamworld Dig now!
