More Thoughts From Me #235: Avengers! Assemble!
Over the weekend, I played some of the Marvel’s Avengers open beta on the Playstation 4. And now I have some thoughts about the game! Avengers! Assemble!
I didn’t know what to expect from the Marvel’s Avengers open beta. Honestly I hadn’t been keeping track of the game. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Avengers characters but I wasn’t sure if this would be my type of game or not.
So I started the beta and almost right away you get an awesome opening movie. I was blown away by the game’s graphics. I was also blown away by how the movie easily slipped into actual gameplay that looked just as good.
The graphics on Marvel’s Avenger’s beta blew my mind. I don’t know if the Avengers have ever looked this good. Even in the Avengers movies. I mean, wow, the graphics in this game are stunning.
And then there’s the actual gameplay. The first hero you play as is Thor. Oh man. Wow. Thor was a delight to play as. Tossing the hammer around, throwing it at enemies, calling down lighting and the other moves he has was incredible. I loved the Dualshock’s rumble feature during all of that. The rumble made it feel like I was more apart of the game.
After Thor, I played as Iron Man and that was pretty cool. Not as cool as Thor but still it was neat to fly around and shoot at the enemy. The ground combat with Iron Man was fun too.
Next was the Hulk. I loved how he could pick up the enemy and throw them. His thunderclap move was awesome too. The jumping with him seemed a bit weird though. It was a little too easy for him to die during this and during combat.
Captain America was cool, especially his shield throwing move and Black Widow was amazing. Though I did not like the platforming with her either.
Actually I would say that I’m not happy with the platforming in Marvel’s Avengers overall. It just seems odd and when I got to the Hulk/Ms Marvel section of the beta, the platforming continued to seem off. Also the Hulk died too easily. Oh and there was a killer load time to get back into this section. It was just awful.
The opening sequence was cool, but the Hulk section felt like an okay Hulk game. I wish the beta had stuck with having you switch between all of the members or at least had given the player a choice of who you could play next!
I did not get to try out any of the game’s multiplayer features, which you would have thought would’ve been a main focus of the beta. I have no idea if the multiplayer was fun or not. I did come away from the beta with mixed feelings though. I never did finish that Hulk/Ms Marvel level…
I think some of the beta was pretty neat but I’m still not sure if its my type of game. Thor was awesome and some of the other characters were cool too but the game still seems like its not right. Which I know, its a beta, so maybe the actual game will be even better. It would be cool if a demo for Marvel’s Avengers was released after the game comes out.
Oh well. It was fun to check out the Avengers beta. Marvel’s Spider-man is still my favorite superhero game!
Did you play the Marvel’s Avenger’s open beta? What did you think of it? Do you want a Guardians of the Galaxy game in this visual style? I know I do!
More Thoughts From Me is an opinion column. The thoughts expressed here are mine and mine alone. Still amazed by the game’s graphics.
