It’s Time for a New Bioshock Trailer

It was 15 years ago that we first visited Rapture in Bioshock. That’s right – check for grey hairs.

Since then we’ve visited Rapture three more times – and also discovered a city in the sky. But it’s been nearly 10 years since Infinite hit Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

And while we know there’s a new Bioshock game coming, we don’t really know anything about it. Well, what better time to turn that around than on an anniversary?

And would you kindly not make it the 20th anniversary?

Under the Sea

Really, I don’t think Bioshock gets the credit it deserves. Five years before the likes of The Last of Us it brought a dark, gritty, adult story to mainstream audiences. And it may be that it started out as an Xbox 360 exclusive. Maybe it just feels a bit retro now. I don’t know. But it doesn’t get mentioned nearly as often as it should.

What Bioshock offered was a stunning setting, fantastic graphics, a more-than-decent story (although not one without flaws) and fun gameplay. Rapture was a look into a world that is probably more interesting now than when the game came out, and, in hindsight, I’m glad we got to revisit it a couple of times. Rapture – cold, dank, and not the place it once was – is a location basically unmatched in video games. The world is as much a character as any of the people you interact with. It’s crazy that that’s such a rarity in this industry.

Infinite was famously delayed, altered and met with less-than-stellar fan reaction. I love it, by the way, and got the platinum. But that seemed to put a pause on the franchise.

Nearly ten years later and hopefully that’s going to start to change.

Bioshock 4 Announcement?

Let’s face it, an anniversary should be a fantastic time to announce a new entry in a franchise. And Bioshock 4 would feel like a pretty exciting game on the horizon.

If only there was a video game show taking place sometime near the anniversary celebrations… Say, Gamescom?

Now that’s in no way a prediction or a hint or anything like that. It’s just a comment on how convenient it would be to show a Bioshock trailer on Tuesday night. And how happy I would be to see it.

Either way, it’s not really a question of if we get a Bioshock announcement. We know it’s coming in some form or another. There have been rumours and rumblings for forever. 2K officially announced it back in 2019, alongside the formation of Cloud Chamber games.

Naturally, Covid would have slowed things down. And video game development is hardly a quick process even without a global pandemic rearing its ugly head.

I wouldn’t be surprised if, three years later, there was nothing ready to show. Gamers are an aggressive bunch and they will let you know if they’re not happy with your work.

Realistically they can take as long as they want and I will still be in line to buy it, alongside lots of others, no doubt. 15 years on, Bioshock is still a joy to play. And I’m pleased the franchise is returning.
