Nintendo Switch Lite Introduced
In a video released this morning, Nintendo introduced the Nintendo Switch Lite, a new addition to the Nintendo Switch Family that take the lightweight, compact features of the Switch to a whole new level. The Nintendo Switch Lite is designed specifically to play Switch games in a dedicated handheld mode. The Nintendo Switch Lite launches on September 20th at a retail price of $259.99CAD and will be available in three separate colours: grey, yellow and turquoise. A specialized carrying case and screen protector kit for the Nintendo Switch Lite will also be available upon release.
With the dedicated handheld mode, the Switch Lite will be able to play all games in the Switch library that support handheld mode (and tabletop mode, if Joy-Con controllers are purchased separately), although some games will have restrictions. For player reference, each game’s mode compatibility is listed on the back of its case and in the Nintendo eShop.
In a statement from Nintendo of America, President Doug Bowser stated that the Nintendo Switch Lite “gives gamers more colour and price point options,” and adding that “now consumers can choose the system that best suits how they like to play”.
Apart from the dedicated handheld mode and integrated controls, there are a few other key differences between the Switch and the Switch Lite. The Switch Lite is more compact by 0.4” in height and 1.2” in length. The screen has been brought from 6.2” to 5.5” to accommodate this.
In addition, the weight has been reduced by 123 grams, an approximate reduction of 30%. Also, likely due to the slightly smaller screen, the battery lasts up to an hour longer than the Switch, depending on which game you are playing.
Users of this new console will have full online capabilities, and will be able to use the local wireless or online play with other Switch and Switch Lite users. The Switch Lite will offer the same Nintendo eShop, News, Album and Parental Control features.
Nintendo has also announced that a Zacian and Zamazenta Edition of the Switch Lite will be available in November, alongside the release of Pokémon Sword and Shield. This edition features red and blue controls, as well as a light grey console with designs of the new legendary Pokémon on the back.
