LEGO Unveils New Super Mario and Yoshi Set: A Must-Have for Fans

LEGO fans and gamers, rejoice! The LEGO Group has unveiled its latest addition to the Super Mario line-up: LEGO Super Mario World Mario & Yoshi (71438). This isn’t just another plastic brick set; it’s a show-stopping display piece that pays homage to the beloved 1990 platformer Super Mario World.

This set features Mario and Yoshi in their original pixelated glory, built across multiple layers with a unique turn-handle system that replicates the game’s running animation. At $129.99, it’s the second-most affordable set in the adult Super Mario line and offers a good value with over 1,200 pieces. Once built, it stands at an impressive 15.5 inches tall, making it a real centerpiece for any gaming or LEGO enthusiast.

According to Carl Merriam, a senior designer on LEGO’s Super Mario range, the set goes beyond aesthetics. “We wanted to capture the original sprite animation from Super Mario World,” he explains. The designers achieved this by not only replicating the pixel art but also incorporating a mechanism that makes Yoshi run with Mario riding on his back. Additionally, a fun and playful touch is the inclusion of a dial that allows Yoshi’s tongue to pop in and out, just like in the game!

The LEGO Super Mario World Mario & Yoshi (71438) is available for pre-order today on LEGO.com and will be released on October 4th. It won’t be a website or store exclusive, so you might be able to snag a deal from select retailers if you’re patient. This set’s success could pave the way for even more gaming pixel-art sets in the future. With licenses like Sonic the Hedgehog and The Legend of Zelda already under their belt, LEGO has the potential to create a whole new wave of must-have collectibles for gamers of all ages.
