Geek Fuel July 2016
It’s another month and another Geek Fuel subscription box review! This month, the main items were themed around Ghostbusters, due to the launch of the new Ghostbusters movie I have yet to see. Overall, I thought this month was not one of the strongest Geek Fuel boxes, but none-the-less, I still enjoyed many of the items I got. Most of them are ultimately give away items – as in I will give them to people who will really enjoy them – and although that means less for me to put on display, it does give me a fair amount of satisfaction, which ultimately makes getting this box worth it.

Badland Downloadable Game and Garden Warfare 2 Wall Decal
One of the best things about Geek Fuel is that they always include a downloadable steam game in their boxes. This month they kicked things up a notch and included a car air freshener modeled after one of the games characters. Nice touch Geek Fuel! If you haven’t played Badland yet, I strongly suggest you do. It really is a great game, and deserves your attention. Here is a short description of the title,
BADLAND: Game of the Year Edition brings BADLAND onto consoles & PC with redesigned controls, loads of content, up-to-four player local multiplayer awesomeness (co-op & versus) and with enhanced Full-HD visuals. Experience the multi-award-winning action adventure like never before – redesigned for the big screens!
The Garden Warfare 2 wall decal is really great, and will go with all the other wall decals in my sons room. I think, unfortunately, that I got the worst possible one. I’ve seen a number of other unboxing videos and every other decal was better than the one I got. But, even though I wasn’t a huge fan of the character, my son will get a kick out of it regardless.
Doctor Who Tardis Shower Curtains
This one of those items that can quickly alienate a large number of people subscribed to Geek Fuel, and I really feel like the company is playing with fire when they add these types of items. A shower curtain is only going to be usable by a select number of Geek Fuel subscribers; fortunately, my wife enjoys a good dose of geekyness around the house, but if she didn’t, these curtains would never see the light of day. For the record, I think they are great! But, I feel like not everyone is going to feel the same way, which makes this a less than ideal item. Great for me, but probably a let down for so many people.
Boo Pin and Alien Playing Cards
Useable items are always great. Sure, figures are nice because you can put them around your office or in a gaming room, but they don’t serve much a purpose outside of pure decoration. Playing cards, however, are always welcome in boxes. I’ve received a number of great playing card decks over the years including a Zelda deck, Mario deck, and even a Halo deck. Although I’m not a fan of the Alien franchise at all, I will get lots of use out of these playing cards. The quality of the cards is superb as well, so I don’t need to be worried about wrecking them through general usage.
The Boo pin is clever. With the focus of the box – at least in my opinion – on Ghostbusters (this month’s tshirt!), having a boo pin in the box just seems fitting. Again, I always prefer the pin to a button, but I have a messenger bag that I use for taking games to friends houses, and this pin will look great and will be unique. It just might be the pin that gets traded some day for a big haul! I could see that happening.
Ghostbusters tShirt
This is probably one of the least favorite tshirts I have ever received in a subscription box. However, all the other shirts have been extraordinary, so this isn’t really a knock on the tshirt. Although it is a bit plain – I’m not a fan of logos on black shirts – the shirt still has value because I know people who LOVE Ghostbusters, and would be thrilled to get this shirt as a random gift. That’s probably what will happen with this shirt, but with the launch of the new Ghostbusters movie, I think this will be a big hit amongst Geek Fuel subscribers this month!
Conclusion
Overall, it is another solid box from Geek Fuel this month. I liked or enjoyed all the items in the box, but I guarantee that the Shower Curtains will be very polarizing. If I was Geek Fuel, I would stay away from items that alienate a good portion of the subscription base. That being said, I give July’s Geek Fuel a solid 7.5 Ghosts out of 10!
