Cosmic Star Heroine Preview
When I first heard Cosmic Star Heroine was coming to the Nintendo Switch, I had no idea what it was. Then, I saw a trailer for the game. Right away, I knew I had to play this game! I loved what I saw of the graphics and the Chrono Trigger like battle system. And thanks to Limited Run Games, I got a review code and I’m getting to play the game early. What do I think Cosmic Star Heroine so far? Is it living up to my initial impressions?
Cosmic Star Heroine may have some similarties to Chrono Trigger-its battle system reminds me of that game, the overworld map is similar, and there are a few other things that make me think of that classic rpg game, however its story and characters are completely different.
Set sometime in the future, Cosmic Star Heroine is about a secret agent and her group of friends who end up going against “the man” to save the world. I don’t want to give you too many details about the story. I think you need to see this story for yourself.
At first, I admit that I thought the story was so-so and that the dialogue was corny. As I’ve progressed in the game, though, the story has gotten better and so has the dialogue. Cosmic Star Heroine never takes itself too seriously and there are bits of humor here and there. Some humor comes from the main characters and some from the non-playable characters that you encounter.
I’m digging just about everything about this game so far. The story, the characters, the dialogue, the graphics, and especially the game’s battle system.
And while the setup of encountering enemies on field and quickly going into battle is a lot like Chrono Trigger, there are some differences to the battle system too. The turn-order listing is very helpful. Oh and the skills that you have in this game are pretty cool. These skills are a bit more limited than Chrono Trigger (at least so far), so you’ll find yourself defending a bit to recharge them. This absolutely adds a layer of strategy to the game. You have to pick and choose which skills you are going to use carefully.
I’m playing the game on easy mode and that easy mode is very easy but there are harder modes for anybody that wants more of a challenge.
I also should note that this game has a lot of exploration. The dungeons are unique so far and the overworld map is extremely cool. Also, remember that festival from Chrono Trigger? Well…
Ok, no spoilers. I think people are going to want to play this game, especially if they are fans of Chrono Trigger and other older rpgs. Cosmic Star Heroine is a cross between a game you would have found one SNES and one found on the Playstation 1. The cutscenes, especially, look like something more out of the PS1. And yet, here we are in 2018 and while this game is retro inspired, it is also a very unique and interesting rpg.
Cosmic Star Heroine will be available on August 14th, 2018. A review of this game will appear on GamesReviews.com closer to the release.
