Customization in Mario Maker 2 Unlike Anything We’ve Seen

With only a few weeks to go before the launch of Mario Maker 2, Nintendo Treehouse was out in full force at E3 2019 putting the game on display. With three, 30 minute sessions of new game play, there was tons of great content for fans to digest. Most notably, in my opinion, was the amount of customization available just in location and environment changes.

The original Mario Maker provided a number of different Mario game backdrops for you to build within, but none of it was on the level of what is about to come from Mario Maker 2. The inclusion of a night option was what had me most intrigued, especially when it was demoed during Nintendo Treehouse Live.

Most specifically, I loved seeing the night mode paired with the Castle and Boo House themes. At night, these two locations become incredibly dark, and without the small glow around Mario, there isn’t much to see. Pair Night Mode with the Castle or Boo House theme, pair even further with enemies can create a number of opportunities.

During the Treehouse Live demo, the team showed off the creation of a night, castle themed area of a level. Using a fire breathing piranha plant, the team was able to show how the light of the fireball could be used to illuminate the area. This one enemy, paired with a well-constructed maze, could make for some interesting level design, levels I cannot wait to create myself!

If you haven’t seen the Mario Maker 2 sessions from Nintendo Treehouse Live, we have embedded all three below. The sheer number of customization options will make this one of the best games in 2019, if not one of the best games to release on Nintendo Switch! We will have a full review of this title around launch, so stay tuned!
