My Little Scythe – Pie in the Sky Expansion Review
Although I’m a grown, 32 year old man, I’ve come to enjoy playing the kid friendly version of Scythe rather than the full fledged, incredibly deep adult version. Over the past few weeks, we have been bringing My Little Scythe to the table time and time again, and have been using the games loan expansion, Pie in the Sky as well. Thanks to our friends at Stonemaeir games, we have been reviewing this title and are ready to do a deep dive on what we think! Is the added cost worth what it brings to your game? Let’s dive in!
We won’t go over all the How to Play rules in this article, but you can find a full video by the one and only Rodney Smith below!
There are not a ton of items in the box, and all of them should fit into your main box when you are finished The expansion brings two more tribes to the game, complete with player boards, tokens, chibi figures, and more. There is also a brand new game mechanic that comes with new items, including a good sized, chunky plastic air ship, and cargo holds and special abilities for all the different factions.
The special ability cards can either be assigned at random, or matched up correctly with the associated faction. Either way, this new card will give each faction a special ability that they can use from time-to-time during the game. The bonuses provided vary drastically from one faction to the next, so after a few rounds, we always opted for random abilities, as opposed to tying it to whatever faction we were playing as. These new abilities don’t overly influence the game, but do provide some fresh experiences for those who have exhausted their play through of My Little Scythe, adding that extra options to work towards, and just a tad more strategic depth.
The new air ship is actually pretty cool. On their turn, should players take the Seek action, they can move the airship around the board, either the number of spaces equal to the number of trophies left on their own game board, or 6 spaces if they roll a 6 on the Air Ship die. When the airship lands on locations with resources on them, players can pick up those resources and add them to their cargo hold space on the bottom of their new ability board. These items are theres to use whenever necessary, which includes delivering items to the castle. While it does make the game a bit easier (since your characters don’t have to have all the resources in their possession when going to the castle), the strategic element of moving the Air Ship around the board makes up for it.
If you are looking to spice up your copy of My Little Scythe, we highly recommend Pie in the Sky. It will make a great addition to an already fantastic experience for kids and adults alike!
