More Thoughts From Me #169: Drifting With The Joycons
I know some people think the joycon controllers on the Nintendo Switch are too small but I’ve always liked them. I especially love playing the system in portable mode with the joycons attached. Unfortunately though, the joycons are not perfect. Let me explain what joycon drifting is and how i finally was able to solve the problem. At least for now.
If you’ve never heard of the joycon drift issue 1) Boy are you lucky and 2) let me explain. Joycons can, sometimes, have an issue where the analog stick will move on its own. This will cause menus to act strange, a service like comic reader InkyPen to act funky, and characters in games to sometimes walk on their own. Its not a major joycon issue, but man, its annoying. I had this issue recently. Finally, I bought new joycons. Did it solve the problem?
The joycon drift issue is gone now! Menus work normally again, InkyPen is easy to read, and characters are not walking by themselves anymore.
Drifting didn’t make my Switch impossible to play but it was so annoying. I knew that I needed new joycons. Thankfully, these new controllers work great and look great too. I got the super nice red/blue joycons. Thats a big upgrade from the regular black ones.
Sure, the joycon issue could happen again. I hope not but its a possibility. I’m not sure what causes the drifting. I’ve heard it might be dirt or dust getting into the joycon. It seems like a mistep from Nintendo though. Here’s hoping that Nintendo knows about the problem and will take care of it in future Joycons. I’m hoping that they already have fixed it with these new joycons I just bought…knock on wood I guess.
Have you ever had any problems with your joycon controllers? Has drifting been a problem for you? How did you solve it? Let us know in the comments!
Next week: What Remains of Edith Finch! Its a PS Plus game this month and I downloaded it. I will definitely have thoughts on it next week.
More Thoughts From Me is an opinion column. The thoughts expressed here are mine and mine alone. Wish the new joycon controllers weren’t so high priced though. Whew.
