Best Egyptian Mythology Games Out Now
Egyptian mythology and gaming has a relationship that many believe doesn’t run deep enough. Considering the stories and gods associated with, you would think that there would be far more games within the genre.
There are, however, a few Egyptian themed games that have made their mark in the industry, and are definitely games that everyone should play at least one. Here are the best Egyptian mythology themed games you can buy right now.
Assassin’s Creed Origins
A series that is already loved so much, Assassin’s Creed Origins was released back in 2017 and took players on a journey through ancient Egypt. Set during the Ptolemaic Era, the time of Cleopatra who also features in the game, the game explores the ancient country.
The best part of the game was the DLC, Curse of the Pharaohs, where players had to stop a curse that was retribution against grave robbers and the like. Players had to find mythological beasts, as well as enter the afterlife, a true Egyptian mythology experience.
The Dagger of Amon-Ra
Released all the way in 1992, The Dagger of Amon-Ra, or Laura Bow II, is an 8-bit adventure detective game. There are a variety of puzzles and difficulty levels that require the player to actually think and do some actual detective work.
The game is simple, you are a young archaeologist who is at a party, a guest dies and you end up locked in a room with everyone else. As guest after guest dies, it is your job to discover who is behind the murders before it is too late. Fun, exciting, mysterious, and a game that requires logic and proper thinking, this game is a must play if you can find it.
Age of Empires: Age of Mythology
While not technically an Age of Empires game, Age of Mythology is an absolutely incredible spin-off that dives into the world of, you guessed it, mythology. You can choose between the Greeks, Egyptians and the Norse, all with their own unique units and attributes.
The game itself is played the same as every Age of Empires game, gathering resources, building up your cities, creating an army to defend and attack other players. However, the addition of mythology allows for some more unique units, buildings and powers that most definitely differ from the original AoE series.
Civilization
Much like Age of Empires, Civilization is a game that requires you to build up your empire and expand for world domination. Civilization V in particular lets you take charge of the Egyptian people, who are represented by Ramses the Great, a pharaoh who is widely regarded as one of the most powerful to ever live.
While the gameplay is fairly standard across all the cultures, being able to expand your Egyptian kingdom and gain world dominance through science, knowledge, trade and your formidable war machine is obviously a lot of fun.
Immortal Cities: Children of the Nile
Children of the Nile is a city building game that is probably more similar to Anno than it is to Age of Empires for instance. You have citizens that build up structures and homes and expand your city, and it is your job to ensure your city is run smoothly and all the needs of your citizens are met.
As you can tell by the name, it is set in Egypt, and the amount of detail that is provided is almost too much to type. It is very much a hands-on game, with every little detail being controlled and decided by whoever is playing, and the player is ultimately responsible for whatever goes wrong. Once again, if you are a fan of City Skylines or Anno, Children of the Nile is most certainly for you.
Egyptian Senet
Based on what is regarded as the oldest known board game, Senet is basically the oldest backgammon, checkers, or chess type game, and was first played thousands of years ago in predynastic ancient Egypt.
It requires logic, strategy and a bi of luck, and as mentioned already, is sort of a combination of backgammon, chess and checkers. Hours of fun and hard to master, this game is definitely worth a look.
Strange Brigade
Strange Brigade is a first-person shooter that has a massive emphasis on co-op gameplay. You take on the role of an adventurer in the 1930’s, who has to team up with 3 other players to fight off ancient egyptian beasts, mummies and everything in between.
You can customize your characters weapons and abilities, and therefore have a team that is able to handle every kind of situation and enemy. The point is to get to eliminate Seteki, an ancient queen whose sprite is terrorising the world. Action, adventure, puzzle solving and co-op play, Strange Brigade has it all.
While there aren’t near to enough games based in Ancient Egypt and based on Egyptian mythology, the ones that do exist are fun, unique, and allow you to dive into the world and learn about the gods, goddesses and stories for the culture.
Whether you enjoy action, puzzle solving, point and click puzzle games or simply highly logical and addictive board games, there is something for every ancient Egypt lover.
