South of Midnight First Thoughts

Yesterday, South of Midnight came out on Xbox Game Pass and I’ve been playing it. I’ve been looking forward to this game a lot. Its was most anticipated 2025 game. So how is it so far?

South of Midnight has been my most anticipated 2025 game for awhile now. I finally got to play it yesterday when it came out on Xbox Game Pass. Here are my first thoughts on the game.

I don’t want to spoil how South of Midnight starts because I had no clue it was going to start that way and if you don’t know how the game starts, I’m not giving it away for you.

That said, I will say that I loved the story right away. I loved how it started and how its progressing. The setup is very good. Hazel, the main character, is excellent. You like her a lot right away.

South of Midnight is very much a folk tale or a fairy tale. It’s a story that has real characters surrounding it and Hazel in the middle of it, but there is so much fantasy to it. The story is really wonderful so far.

And the gameplay is very good too.

In South of Midnight, you’ll find yourself running and jumping a lot. And you won’t get lost because the game offers an optional guided line that you call up whenever you are not sure where to go. I like that a lot. South of Midnight is pretty linear in its environments but sometimes you can get a little turn around so its good to have the option to have something that’ll point the way you have to go.

Hazel’s combat and exploration moves expand a bunch even early on. I don’t spoil those either, but her move set in and out of combat is a lot of fun and very easy to use.

I also have to mention the game’s breathtaking graphics. The characters and environments are just so well animated and beautiful. South of Midnight is stunning so far.

Oh and I absolutely have to mention the game’s music. While you explore, the music is so good and then in combat its also excellent. When I had big story moment(s) that I can’t spoil, the music got even better. Actual songs with vocals came on. Oh my. Wow. The songs were amazing. I loved them. I know there are other songs with vocals in this game and I can’t wait to hear them too.

South of Midnight is an excellent game so far. Its graphics and music especially are fantastic but I love its gameplay too. This game is an absolute joy so far.
