Mario Kart 8 Preview
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launches next week, and multiple websites are pushing out their various previews and reviews. While we do get the opportunity to review most of Nintendo’s products – they did send us a Switch after all! – there are the odd moments where demands far exceeds supply. As a rerelease on a new platform, this appeared to be one of those situations.
Don’t worry though, as we will be picking up our own copy next week, and will be reviewing it as soon as possible.
Thanks to a number of friends in the industry, I’ve compiled these quick thoughts however!
1. Purple Sparks for drifting is a nice, new feature, but very limited in when it can be used. Without the perfect, gradual curve, you likely won’t be able to get the purple sparks!
2. Battle mode is the biggest reason to pick up Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. If you only plan on doing the races again, you might want to wait for a sale. But if battle mode is something you love, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has you covered with 8 all new arenas to battle in.
3. All courses are unlocked from the start, and the only unlockables are kart parts and golden Mario. This is a positive and a negative. On the one hand, those that have slogged through Mario Kart 8 on Wii U won’t have to unlock everything. On the negative side, those that have never played Mario Kart before might not have the incentive to try everything out, or to master everything, as it will all be unlocked.
4. Off-TV play with 4 players is surprisingly doable on the tiny screen. This is one I obviously haven’t tried out myself, but multiple outlets are saying it works well!
