Fortnite: The Highest-Earning Game in 2019

2019 was a big year for gaming, with a vast selection of awesome games to play like Resident Evil 2, Call of Duty Modern Warfare, Apex legends, and many more. We have also seen lots of new innovations in gaming technology, including the VR sector, console gaming, and of course PC’s. But there was one game which reigned over all the other releases that year.

Fortnite wasn’t just a game, it was a global phenomenon. It was the highest earning game in 2018 and retained its title throughout 2019 too. Who would have thought that a free to play game would earn so much money? According to Betway, the third-person battle royale shooter earned just under $2 billion in revenue.

Other sources stated that the free-to-play gaming industry’s overall revenue generated increased by almost 10%, to $87.1 billion in 2019. The massive increase took place thanks to Fortnite and other great titles like Dungeon Fighter Online, Arena of Valor, Honor of Kings, Pokemon Go and Candy Crush Saga.

Another honorable mention would be Apex Legends, which even though has not made to the top 10 games in 2019, it managed to set the world record for the fastest 50 million downloads for any PS4, XBOX or PC game.

In 2019, Fortnite’s earnings had actually dwindled by around 25%. In the past year in 2018, it had set a record of $2.4 billion. How did it manage to make such a great success?

The gameplay consists of a large 100 player map with teams of up to four players, who start off by jumping off a flying bus into the map down onto the area that they desire, where they try their best to find as much loot as fast as they can, so that they battle it out with other squads till they are the last squad standing. There are also several special game modes which are released occasionally, including modes that feature characteristics from the storylines of their famous  interesting crossovers with a few major box office titles, like Star Wars, Avengers and Stranger Things, which gave the game a considerable boost.

Thanks to the constant updates and the ingenious lure of the battle pass, and of course, the epic intense gameplay of a battle royale shooter with an awesome sandbox twist, with plenty of extras to unlock and show off your level of skill, there’s no doubt that the game was going to make it go big. Another big aspect of the game and why it’s more successful than other shooters is its age-friendly theme, making it a fun game to play for all age groups, unlike other shooters like Call of Duty, or GTA, which are restricted to players of 18 years of age and older.

In 2020, Fortnite still remains the best and most earning cross-platform video game in the world, the big question is, will it be surpassed? Or will we keep seeing major updates and added content which will keep us wanting to play more and more? Time will tell.
