Curious Expedition

Once upon a time in a land before Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One, there was a game called Oregon Trail. It was PC game. In it, you traveled the Oregon Trail, trying to survive, and likely getting killed every single time. And now Curious Expedition has come to Nintendo Switch. Its not exactly Oregon Trail but it has a lot in common with it.

Curious Expedition has you playing as a famous explorer of your choice who goes out into the world seeking fame, glory, and new discoveries.

The game is told via text for the most part, with some supporting pixelated graphics such as an overhead map and static images. The graphics in this game are very simple. Curious Expedition feels more like an old PC game (Oregon Trail) than a Nintendo Switch game.

Curious Expedition is such a unique experience. You just never know what will happen in this game. Sometimes you’ll find a treasure or discovery and get back home alive. Most of the time, you’ll die.

I recommend checking out Curious Expedition’s tutorial mode first. It explains the game’s controls pretty well. If you play the actual game without playing the tutorial first, you might be ok with most of the gameplay but you will be lost when it comes to the battle system.

Thats right, there are battles in this game and they are pretty hard even on easy mode. I think the battle system is the weakest part of the game: its just not that fun and its too hard.

Curious Expedition’s stories, characters, and adventures are neat. Old school PC adventure fans will especially love this game.

In the end, Curious Expedition won’t be for everyone. There is a lot of reading in this game, the action isn’t that good, and it plays much more like a PC game than a Switch game. Still, I think its great that games like this can come to the Nintendo Switch. Adventure games use to be a dying genre but the Nintendo Switch has brought it back to life.

Curious Expedition gets a 7.5 out of 10.
