The New Platforms Taking The Gaming World By Storm

Gamers know that something you can always rely on is for games to adapt and evolve over time. All games go through a number of cycles in their lifetimes, and there are many different changing characteristics which you can expect to see as part of this evolution.

The switching over from one platform to another is one perfect example of this. It seems as though every year brings a new set of potential platforms for games to be played on. Sometimes these are brand new machines, and that can be very exciting in itself. But sometimes, this happens through the use of older technology being re-appropriated for gaming. Let’s see some examples in recent times of when that actually worked pretty well.

Instant Messaging

Although at first glance instant messaging services might not seem like the ideal platform for any type of game, in fact they are growing in popularity with users all over the world. This might be at least in part due to the fact that such technologies were already in use by a great many people – but either way, you can be sure that more and more games are going to be played on such platforms in the near future. If you are wondering what kind of games these might be, then you might be surprised at their complexity. These tend to lend themselves well to educational games, making them great opportunities for families who want to make more of instant messaging. For example, you can have opponents try to find the pattern in a set of emojis, a mathematical challenge that is a real brain trainer.

Snapchat

If you have read Armchair Empire anytime recently, you will have seen that Snapchat are now themselves introducing some fascinating ways of playing games on their own platform. Generally, these work by using in-built filters to play classic side-scrolling and platform style games, and the overall complexity of these games are quite surprising given the nature of the platform. No, it’s not XBox, but you genuinely might be able to while away quite a few hours if you find the right game for you – and a worthy opponent to your high score. Of course, the kind of games you can play might be fairly limited, but it is all free of charge and they can be surprisingly addictive.

YouTube

Google, never one to be left behind, have also announced and released a new gaming platform, YouTube Gaming, and it already looks as though it’s going to be quite popular. Only a couple of years old, it is already being used fairly extensively, and part of the appeal in this case is that users can play similar games to genuine, gung-ho style shoot-em-ups, as well as a range of softer and simpler alternatives, if that floats your boat. No matter what kind of game you are into, you are bound to have fun with this new platform – and for the most part, it’s free – something that gamers are always bound to be glad about.
