Why is there so much DLC – The Sims 4
My wife and I recently got our first personal computer in a long, long time. And in reality, we didn’t get a PC, but opted instead for an iMac. As a gamer, I knew the gaming options on iMac were getting better, but were still sparse. So I turned to a game that I eventually found for under $10…The Sims 4.
Early into playing the Sims 4, I was really enjoying my experience. My Sims were thriving, there were tons of great options in the store to outfit my house. Life was good. Then I got sucked into seeing The Sims 4 builds on YouTube, and saw some outstanding building ideas that I really wanted to try. Unfortunately, most of those builds would have required me to purchase multiple DLC packs.
Before I knew it, I was saying, “Wow, to build that into my house, I would have to spend another $75 on DLC.” I then decided to invest in some DLC, till I saw the sheer number of bundles, and hte price of said bundles.
Sure, I got the game for $10, but DLC packs for 49.99? And there are so many to purchase! Packs about tropical islands, and packs about night life. Packs about this and packs about that. It seems like so much content is locked into these packs, and I asked myself, “Are people buying these?”
The short answer has to be yes. EA wouldn’t release so many packs if people weren’t buying them, and based on the vibrant YouTube community around this game, people are a-ok with dropping all that extra coin.
For now, I’m going to stick to this experience – playing the base game without any extras. And if I get bored of that, I might throw in the towel on the whole game. I’m not about to spend 50 bucks so I can build on some tropical island somewhere.
