More Thoughts From Me #106: Is it A Legend or A Legacy?

I’ve been playing Legend of Legacy lately for the 3DS. Its a jrpg that is mostly focused on combat and exploration. What do I think of the game so far? Let’s find out!

Legend of Legacy for the 3DS has a lot of good points. The game’s graphics are really good, the battle system is a lot of fun, and uncovering maps in new areas is pretty neat. However, not everything about the game is perfect.

There is hardly any story to this game. Most of the gameplay focuses on fighting battles and uncovering maps. This can be fun in small doses but gets a bit repetitive because theres not much else to do. There’s only one town to explore and theres not much there other than a bar, a place to save & rest, a shop or a place to talk to the ruler of the town. There are some towns people but they don’t have a lot to say. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that Legend of Legacy is a bad game but it really doesn’t live up to its title.

I can’t see Legend of Legacy being a legendary game nor having any sort of legacy. I would be suprised if it ever gets sequel. I’m not sure how well the title sold in Japan, the USA or elsewhere so maybe I’m wrong. I’d hope if there is a sequel that the story is improved and theres more to do such as other towns to visit and perhaps a mini game or two.

There is another thing that I like about this game though. I like that you can pick your main protagonist. However, I really wish that each character had different areas to play in or that each story was more fleshed out to make for different experiances. The characters in this game are well designed but the story basically drops all of the characters into the same area.

Legend of Legacy is not a horrible game. I think if you can get the game pretty cheap then its worth a play for jrpg fans. This isn’t the type of game that would make someone a fan of the genre. And I wouldn’t recommend buying this game at full price. There are better jrpgs on the 3DS, but Legend of Legacy is not a bad game and I will continue to play it.

That said, if you need a brand new jrpg, you should wait for Radiant Historia later this month or Alliance Alive next month. Both of those games look far better than Legend of Legacy!

I’ve played the second and third game in the Saga on the 3DS but never played the first game! So next weeks More Thoughts will focus on my impressions of the first game in Mercenaries Saga Chronicles.
