More Thoughts From Me #159: The Switch Finds Its (War) Groove
I don’t like Advance Wars. I’ve tried to like the series, but its just never hooked me. But when I saw WarGroove for the Nintendo Switch for the first time, I thought it looked cool. Yes, some of it looks inspired by Advance Wars, but the fantasy setting appealed to me more than Advance Wars military setting. So I was interested in the game and I become more interested as I saw further footage. So yes, I bought WarGroove for the Switch. What do I think of it?
WarGroove is one of the best strategy games on the Nintendo Switch right now. Visually the game looks really nice but its the gameplay that absolutely will hook strategy fans.
I’ve heard some people say they find WarGroove easy but I think the game starts out that way and gets harder as it goes. I know I’m starting to have a bit more difficulty with some of the maps. WarGroove really rewards the player who takes their time, studies the map and comes up with the right strategy. WarGroove does remind me of Advance Wars, but is not a clone of that game.
WarGroove may be inspired by Advance Wars, however it has its own personality. For instance, there are dogs in this game and they are cute. If they “die”, they run away instead of actually die. Oh and you must play the map someone created called Patsgroove. Its the best. Other elements that are unique to WarGroove are its sense of humor and its wonderful story. The story is well written, the characters are interesting, and the cutscenes are neat. I look forward to finding out what will happen next in the story.
If the story mode isn’t enough for you, WarGroove also has a Map Maker, local and online multiplayer, unlockable modes, and you can even download maps that other people created.
I am very impressed with WarGroove’s Map Maker especially. The cutscene maker is incredible. I haven’t fully learned how to make a map for this game yet but I really want to. I’ve tried out maps that other people have made and really loved the results I’ve seen. WarGroove has great replay value and its an excellent addition to the Nintendo Switch’s lineup!
Have you played WarGroove yet? What do you think of it?
Next week: What’s going on with Animal Crossing Switch? It wasn’t shown during the recent Nintendo Direct. Why not?! I have a lot of thoughts on this and I’ve been dying to share (warning: this might turn out to be a bit of a rant too). See ya next week!
More Thoughts From Me is an opinion column. The thoughts expressed here are mine and mine alone. I really need to get back to WarGroove!
