Emmet’s Thricycle! – 70823 LEGO Review

With The Lego Movie 2 heading into theatres this week, we had the fortune opportunity to review a few of the sets associated with the film on GamesReviews, thanks to our friends at The LEGO Group International. First up, a look at Emmet’s Tricycle!, a set that doesn’t include a lot of pieces, but is definitely something you likely don’t have in your collection! Let’s dive in!

The Build

With only 174 pieces, putting together Emmet’s Tricycle! isn’t all that difficult, even though the set utilizes a number of Technic pieces that often makes sets more difficult for younger builders. Still, with only a little bit of help from his brother, my 4 (almost 5) year old was able to put the set together in about 30 minutes, which is a tad longer than it took me (about 15-20).

There aren’t a lot of small pieces, which also means there isn’t a lot of time consuming work to be done here. There also aren’t a lot of rare pieces included. Everything in Emmet’s Tricycle! is pretty much standard fare for LEGO, so those looking to cash in on an exclusive or hard-to-find piece will be disappointed. If you are looking for an Emmet figure, and missed out on the LEGO Movie minifigure sets, this is a cheaper way to get him in your collection.

The coolest feature in this set, in my opinion, is the Duplo Block character you ultimately will build. Even without seeing the film or trailers, it is instantly recognisable, and offered just a tad extra nostalgia for my son who just came off playing with Duplo on a daily basis. In fact, the Duplo Blocks came out of the closet after putting this together!

Playability

Once you have the tricycle put together, you quickly realize this set is more about playing than presenting. Although the base you build does act as a ‘station’ for the bike to fit in – as it would fall over without some type of support when not being played with – ultimately this set is meant to be zoomed around the family room floor, as opposed to on display on the shelf. While my kids don’t seem attached to these LEGO Movie 2 sets as much as the other sets they have reviewed over the past few months, I chalk that up as not being familiar with the new film, as opposed to anything else.

When looking at the few sets that we do have, I can imagine the playtime with them will increase once the kids have seen the movie. The second we get home from our screening, I can see them recreating the movie using the sets they have, which is ultimately the reason behind releasing these sets in the first place.

Conclusion

Emmet’s Tricycle! isn’t a large set, and the price of 19.99 is a bit steep for a set containing only 174 pieces, but this is a great way to add Emmet to your collection, as well as bringing a little bit of the LEGO Movie 2 into your home without breaking the bank. If your kids go bonkers for the film, this is an affordable way to keep that excitement alive!
