I love Castlevania. Let me get that out of the way. I’m also a big fan of Shovel Knight and Panzer Paladin. Yes I’m a complete sucker for 8-bit style Metroidvania game. Cathedral for the Nintendo Switch is a really good one!

In Cathedral you play as a nameless Knight who wakes up in, yes, a cathedral. He has no idea how he got there or who he is. He is also a silent protagonist. Thats fine. There are NPCs that you meet who do the talking. Meanwhile our hero explores the Cathedral and possibly some other places…

I don’t want to give away too much of the game’s story. Its very interesting and very mysterious. Like all Metroidvania’s though, the most important thing about Cathedral is its gameplay!

You will run, you will jump, your character has a sword and will find other weapons too. There are some puzzles and best of all: there are boss fights. They are awesome.

Cathedral has plenty of exploration and some very light rpg aspects, such as health upgrades. The core of the gameplay is the wonderful Castlevania like exploration/combat. This game is so much fun.

And Cathedral looks good too! I especially thought of the more recent Panzer Paladin while playing it. There’s no mechs like that game but the graphical style is similar in some ways.

Overall, Cathedral is another game that fans of the Metroidvania genre will want to play. As a fan of this type of game, I never get tired of it. Do not miss out on Cathedral!

Cathedral gets a 8.5 out of 10.

Thank you to Plan of Attack for providing a digital code for this review. Cathedral will be available today (2/18/21) on the Nintendo Switch eshop!
