Xbox Kinect Officially Dead
Despite stopping production on the Xbox One Kinect in November, Microsoft was still pumping out the adapters necessary to play the Kinect on the Xbox One S and the Xbox One X. Well, they were at least, until this week when it was announced that they have also ceased production on that item as well, officially killing the Kinect. This should come at no surprise as many wondered why the Kinect made the generational jump from the Xbox 360 to the Xbox One in the first place. Regardless, it really is a good feeling knowing this aspect of Microsoft’s home console is gone. That’s not a slight against Xbox either, but rather, a chance for the company to shift focuses.
The Kinects life span was pretty short, only lasting from 2010 to the present, and to be honest, the product was never the hit Microsoft hoped it would be. With the Kinect officially being no more, Microosft can now allocate those resources – as few as they might be – to other projects within the company. For me, the Kinect was like a ball and chain around the neck of the Xbox One, and now that it has been cut loose, their is a bit more – mind you, I said a bit – flexibility in terms of what they do next.
