GTA V Reaches a Billion Dollars in Three Days
Take-Two have announced that Grand Theft Auto V has reached a billion dollars over its first three days. That makes it the fastest selling entertainment property ever, beating out last year’s Black Ops 2 and The Avengers.
GTA V was expected to do incredibly well, of course, but it’s absolutely blown away expectations, becoming not only the icon for this generation of gaming critically, but financially as well. Some are claiming this proves the gaming industry is secure and that DLC and micro-transactions aren’t really necessary if you just “build a great game,” but that’s oversimplifying things a little. At the end of the day, this is Grand Theft Auto, a franchise that’s 20 years old and which has been hugely successful for almost all of that time (and in the papers for just as long).
This announcement is currently based on “company estimates” of how well GTA is doing, so it’s the best guess going for now. You can read the full press release here.
From the press release:
“Grand Theft Auto is a cultural phenomenon and Rockstar Games continues to redefine what can be achieved in interactive entertainment,” said Strauss Zelnick, Chairman and CEO of Take-Two. “We are incredibly proud of the extraordinary critical and commercial response to Grand Theft Auto V.”
