Disney Lorcana: Azurite Sea – Product Change is a Foot!

Ravensburger was nice enough to send over a few items from the recent Disney Lorcana – Azurite Sea release, and I made a number of shocking discoveries. I’ve cooled on Disney Lorcana just a little bit as the cost of purchasing booster boxes was becoming a bit much for me. We have been reviewing the starter decks from each set thanks to Ravensburger, but this time the company stepped up and sent over the newly overhauled Gift Set and perhaps new-to-me Trove as well. Let’s take a look!

Azurite Sea is all about pirates, with the majority of the theming coming from Disney’s Treasure Planet movie. This is one of the best, lesser known Disney films, and one that designer Ryan Miller told me he was really excited about when I interviewed him at GenCon 2023. It’s nice to see Ryan’s love of Treasure Planet finally getting the full treatment it deserves.

The two new starter decks are great, full of really fun cards with both great artwork and great abilities. They are a great way to either add certain cards to your collection from this set, or for new players to learn the ins and outs of Disney Lorcana. We will have another article in a bit on these starter decks, but I wanted the focus of this review to be the changes I noticed in both the Gift Set and the Trove.

First and foremost, I basically passed on the last set of Disney Lorcana, so it’s possible these changes happened prior to this set. But I can guarantee that with this set, these are welcome additions and modifications to previously uninspired additional products.

The Gift Set was always the worst Disney Lorcana purchase in my opinion. Yes, you got some great holographic cards and a couple packs, but the giant Disney Lorcana cards you got as well were just a throw away item in my opinion. Did people actually collect those? Do they serve a purpose? When I opened up the Gift Set from Azurite Sea, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the previous set of holographic cards and oversized cards were replaced with a single holographic promo card, the usual packs of cards, and a Disney Lorcana album.

I have looked at purchasing the Disney Lorcana albums in the past, but never really felt that the price I paid in Canadian dollars was worth what I was getting. A simple binder and clear card sheets was a much cheaper, and frankly better, option. I do, however, like to see this album bundled into the gift set. Not only does it make the gift set value better in my opinion, as the set is full of items you actually might want, but it also makes the albums themselves more “affordable.” I’m glad to have this album, and it’s already full of cards from this set. That wouldn’t have happened if this wasn’t a part of the gift set.

The other welcome change to the Azurite Sea release is the upgrade made to the Troves. Granted, these upgrades have been happening slowly over time, with Ravensburger adding dividers into the boxes, then a Lore Counter dial, and now dice to track damage. I think that these changes to the Trove’s, along with the changes to the gift set, is Disney and Ravensburger listening to fans and providing better valued products on shelves at retail. Owning and investing in a Trading Card Game can be a lot, so every little bit of value – whether actual or perceived – is a good thing in my opinion.

Azurite Sea has proven to be the rejuvenating release I needed to get back into collecting and playing Disney Lorcana. The cards and artwork are mesmerizing, proving once again that Disney Lorcana is the best looking Trading Card Game currently available on the market. With more great releases like this, I think the community around this fantastic game is only going to grow.
