Do You Need to Own More Than One Horrified Board Game?
The Horrified series of games from Ravensburger has been insanely popular, and for good reason – the cooperative gameplay is incredibly compelling, and the game provides a solid challenge for all levels of board game players. Being able to fight fabled monsters from different mythologies is outstanding, the variety keeps the game feeling fresh time and time again. But with so many versions of Horrified available, do you need more than one?
When we wrote our review of Horrified: World of Monsters we noted that monsters could be interchanged between that game and the Greek Monsters experience,, but that we didn’t have the chance to do that since we only owned one version of the series. Upon reading our review, Ravensburger reached out and asked if we wanted to try another Horrified title, so we could see what swapping monsters between games looks like. We are super glad we took them up on this offer!
First and foremost, this official from Ravensburger is a great place to start when talking about combining your Horrified adventures!
Honestly, yes – there is a really compelling reason to own more than one version of Horrified. It should be noted that at this point, not all versions have monsters that are interchangeable. The monsters from World of Monsters and Greek Monsters can be interchanged, but not with other Horrified products, at least not right now.
Regardless of which board you choose to use, the event decks, citizens, items, lairs and more will remain consistent with that version of the game. It’s the monsters and heroes where some flexibility is available. You can choose any combination of monsters and heroes from either World of Monsters or the Greek Monsters Horrified board games. This provides a deeper level of customization as the pool of available monsters and heroes essentially doubles. Monsters crossing over from one game to the other are considered Visiting Monsters and have some different placement rules for starting the game. The same goes for heroes.
Ravensburger has done a fantastic job of putting all the details in the World of Monsters rulebook on how to interchange heroes and monsters, including any rules variations for specific monsters like the Yeti or Medusa. Similarly, a lot of work was done to make sure that regardless of symbols, colors are what matters when playing with a mixture of the two games. So while the various symbols you’ll need to reference might be different between the two games, the colors are then what you should focus on.
When Greek Monsters was released, I’m not sure of a fully planned interchangeable experience as on the table yet. That means that while World of Monsters is built to be interchangeable with Greek Monsters, it’s not the same the other way. That’s why World of Monsters includes tiles used specifically for games where visiting monsters occur, whereas Greek Monsters does not have the same tiles.
Regardless, I think the above video and the World of Monsters rulebook does a great job of explaining how to make the swap should you choose the Greek Monsters board and decks.
I think allowing for cross monster play is a fantastic idea. Not only will it entice fans of the series to continue buying into future releases, but it allows for more variety when getting your favorite Horrified board to the table. The ability to interchange monsters and heroes has made Horrified one of our most played games over the last month!
