Ys X Nordics Demo Impressions

We checked out the demo for Ys X Nordics and now have some thoughts on it.

Ys X Nordics demo starts off with the hero, Adol, on a ship journey when they’re attacked by pirates. This is where Adol meets Karja and ends up teamed up with her whether he likes it or not. The story in Ys X’s demo is interesting but its really the gameplay where the demo shines.

This isn’t a small demo. You get to play three chapters of Nordics and they are not short chapters. The gameplay is action packed and you get to use multiple abilities and test out the game’s swinging mechanic. Yes, like something out of Castlevania, you have a “whip” that you can use to swing over gaps and grab onto enemies. Its really cool!

The fighting, overall, is fun and as you progress in the demo you learn more abilities and can level up your characters. Fighting on foot is not the only way to fight though.

In the Nordics demo, you can sail the high seas! The sailing is neat, though a bit too slow. You can speed up a little but it would’ve been nice if it was faster. We hear that you can upgrade the ship in the full game and it gets a lot faster. The ship-to-ship battles are pretty fun though. There is a little exploration too, you can find treasures on the high seas, though the game does limit you to a specific area in which you can sail. Ys X isn’t an open world game.

Nordics does have a lot of exploration though. You even get to grab lots of treasure and explore dungeons. There’s a crafting mechanic that unlocks to make medicine.

Ys X demo is pretty good overall. It should give you a good sense of whether this is a game you want or not. We enjoyed it a lot.

You can check out the demo now on the Nintendo Switch eshop! The full game comes out on October 25th, 2024.
