LEGO Advent Calendar Reviews

As we begin the Fall season, it is inevitable that Christmas products would also be hitting shelves, and that is the case with The LEGO Group’s newest set of Advent calendars. My wife and I have loved gifting our kids Advent calendars ever since they were born, but recently we have been investing in the LEGO advent calendar to help populate our growing LEGO winter village we build each year.

Any discussion about this year’s advent calendar will be limited to what can be seen on the box. We will not spoil the contents that are not public knowledge!

LEGO Advent Calendars are a nice mixture of LEGO minifigures and small little builds. In the past we’ve had LEGO Star Wars calendars, which were a nice mixture of your favorite Star Wars characters but also small little ship builds. With LEGO City calendars in the past, we got a mixture of holiday themed minifigures – elves, skiers, etc. – and little builds like snow covered mailboxes, christmas trees, presents, and more.

The joy of an advent calendar is the little gift or candy you get day after day. For longtime and hardcore LEGO fans, what could be better than a brand new LEGO item to enjoy day-after-day for 24 days. We generally try to purchase one calendar per child we have, although those costs can add up fairly quickly.

That being said, there is value here. The LEGO City box, for example, comes with 6 mini-fgures plus a baby figure. This includes a Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and a family of 5 (4 mini figures and a baby). Also included in the LEGO City box is a dog wearing a christmas sweater – not sure if this is available anywhere else – a cat, stroller, scooter, and more.

The benefit for our family is the wide variety of unique items you get, and how those items could factor into future LEGO play sessions. With the LEGO City calendar, you get a stroller, which is a lego build I haven’t seen to date. You also get the aforementioned dog with the Christmas sweater, which again feels pretty unique to me.

I think the LEGO Friends calendar that we looked at also has similar value. There are a bunch of figures included, and a ton of accessories for those figures, including a mini-build fireplace, numerous mini-build toys, a rabbit and cat, a campfire, and more. These mini builds are not only fun to quickly put together, but they look fantastic as well and fit nicely into the winter village our family has slowly been building over the years.

LEGO Advent Calendars are always going to be something my family recommends, and it’s not because The LEGO Group provided these to us for review. We have been purchasing and using LEGO Advent calendars for years, and love them each and every time. This isn’t the cheapest way to have an Advent calendar for your kids, but for LEGO fans, it’s going to be the best option!
