LolBeans: The Rise of Casual Battle Royale

When Fall Guys took off the way it did, a genre was born. And it’s no surprise that people are hungry for as much content as possible.

That’s why it’s amazing that other developers have taken it upon themselves to make similar games. One such title is Lolbeans, and it offers up much of the same entertainment that Fall Guys offers.

It has one major advantage though: it’s available to play in browser, and for free. If you’re one of those people who don’t or can’t download the full Fall Guys experience on console, mobile or PC, you’ll be able to get into a game of Lolbeans just by booting up your browser.

Yes, it’s as easy as entering a name at Lolbeans io and, if you want to, customising your character. And before long, you’ll be playing your game. After you’re in, you’ll find that the game is easy to get into. You can control you character with the arrow buttons, and the rest comes down to just trying it out.

If you enjoyed Fall Guys, there’s an awful lot here you’ll enjoy too. It’s always fantastic when a new genre takes off, and Battle Royale was hugely successful. But the beautiful thing about that is that it didn’t end up just being the big shooters that jumped in on it. When you look at the Battle Royale discussion, certain names come up time and time again – Fortnite, Call of Duty… Hell, even Halo is discussed in regards to the genre more often than it should be.

Ya know, considering it hasn’t happened yet. But the casual market for Battle Royale games deserves to boom too. When you look at the list of popular games in this genre, it is relatively short. But there are some big hitters in there. For instance, Tetris 99. And, to a lesser extent, Pacman 99.

Taking these hugely popular titles and adding an element of large-scale competition to them might seem like an obvious idea, but it’s all in how you do it. And both games do it relatively well.

Fall Guys is the most obvious casual Battle Royale. Combining It’s a Knockout with themed tie-ins was a genuinely genius idea, and it’s incredible to see that it took off. That was, of course, in part due to the smart idea of having it on PlayStation Plus. I’m not sure it would have been nearly as popular had it just launched onto the digital marketplaces. That’s especially true considering it was a paid game for a long time.

Among Us is another title that hit at the right time, and enjoyed a deserved popularity. It wasn’t a Battle Royale game, but operated under a similar idea – you had to survive as long as possible. What made it so clever was that one of your teammates was actually a secret murderer, and you had to figure out who it was.

The best thing about that game – other than getting your wife murdered by random strangers – was that it was relatively simple. There wasn’t any tricks, there didn’t need to be fantastic graphics or mind-blowing storylines. It was just good, old fashioned fun.

And actually, that’s the truth for all the games in this article. From Lolbeans all the way through. The idea isn’t to reinvent the wheel, or to have something so edgy and cool that anybody playing it cuts themselves.

The idea is all about having fun. That’s what games used to be, and this emerging genre manages to explore the same ideas as the retrogames we used to know and love. That has to be respected.
