Are RPG’s Primed for Change?

With the recent release of Elden Ring, there had been lots of speculation to whether or not the game could live up to the hype that had been built and by all expectations it certainly did by surpassing sales forecasts and instantly being heralded as one of the best games in category – changing the formula for a genre can be difficult though – more casual options like online casinos for a different audience have been through this change with the launch of live games at casinoohneanmeldung.casino, on a bigger scale games like Valorant have helped to evolve a somewhat stale FPS scene, but are role-playing  games primed for a change with the release of Elden Ring?

The conversation comes from the change in what’s traditionally represented in these types of games, or more in point the lack there of – continuing the very minimalistic style that’s common across all FromSoftware games, Elden Ring featured a very limited heads-up display with few markers, no quest log, and the lack of any real direction to progress outside of a small visual feature on sites of grace. For some players, this was a great change and led to a very immersive and open-ended game, for others the change wasn’t so great and made it difficult to progress.

It had also led to some backlash from the development community too, particularly as a note from a developer of Horizon’s newest title suggested the choice for design was poor and that users expected something very different, and that a more standard direction should’ve been taken to avoid the criticisms of certain players. Despite this, Elden Ring has gone on to see some incredible feedback and have these same features praised for being a change that had been sought after by an audience without knowing.

It’s not something entirely easy to implement however and may just be a one-time deal for the FromSoftware team as many aspects of the game allowed these features, or lack thereof to shine through – the same approach may not work for other games without following the same formula too. Some other titles will surely follow the same approach and could prime the RPG market for change much like other games have done in the past, but a few poor releases could mean this same approach is saturated and less desirable, and more traditional approaches will take over once more.

Regardless of what side of the fence players fall on, innovative change like this is a good way to spin a new style for games that have become very similar over time, and also lead to new expectations for these games too.
