Welcome to Empire Bay. I grew up playing the Mafia series on every platform and was so excited for a remaster. Mafia 2 stars Vito Scarletta, a young Italian who wants to live large and make real money. To achieve this, he turns to organized crime. At the start of the game, Vito lives with his mother and sister in a little apartment.
When the game starts, Vito is with his best friend Joe Barbaro doing a jewelry heist. As they attempt to break into the store a Police Officer catches them, so they begin to flee. Vito is unfortunately caught and was sent into war in Italy to help the Americans the year is 1943, instead of jail time.
After serving part of his sentence at war in Italy, Vito returns home and meets up with Joe and this is where his life of crime will start. Joe was able to get Vito papers to get away from the army and help Vito start to do jobs for different Mafia families. Finally, you are given the reigns to really do some work.
Throughout Empire Bay you’re still able to collect the Playboy Magazines from the original game which is a good touch. Mafia 2 also has one of the best soundtracks I have heard in a game. Mafia 2 has amazing voice acting with a stellar story that keeps you drawn in. As you progress through the game the story gets better. The game looks much improved graphically, as well. Vito is able to do several things in the open world of Empire Bay with his hard-earned cash. Visiting clothing shops to upgrade your look, a visit to the local gun shop to purchase ammo and weapons. My personal favourite is visiting the garage to upgrade vehicles and add a personal touch to them – you can even customize licence plates.
Along the story we meet some amazing characters, some you will love and others you will hate. While playing, you almost forget the game is over ten years old. Mafia 2 plays smoothly in a sharp looking world, making this a must play even if you played the game before. I have played and beat this game on every platform at least twice. The game length is just perfect, not too long and not too short; it took me approximately twelve hours to beat the game. The ending will leave you on edge with a lot of questions that run through your mind, but the game doesn’t feel unfinished. It feels like a well written chapter to a longer saga.
Overall, if you love Mafia games and movies this is the game for you, a must play. After playing Mafia 2 on every platform, I memorized the story but yet it is still enjoyable to me. I am excited to see where the franchise goes next. It has been five years since the release of Mafia 3 and I hope that means Mafia 4 is around the corner! We can all dream, right?
