Calico Update Impressions

One of my last 2020 Nintendo Switch reviews was an indie game called Calico. I liked it a lot but there were some issues that kept it back from being a great game. It was still a good one. And now an update has been released for the game. Here are my first impressions of whats changed.

In my review of Calico I said, “Also not being able to share screenshots of this game online seems like a huge mistake!”

In the newest update for the game, this mistake has been fixed! The screenshots you see in this article are ones I took via my Switch. You can also share video of the game now too! I’m very happy with this addition. Calico is a good looking game and its nice to share screenshots/video on twitter and elsewhere now.

There are other changes to the game via the update too. The most notable is something else I mentioned in my review: “There is one odd thing we should mention about the game’s controls though: the B button is the confirm button for Calico instead of A button. Thats takes a bit of getting use to. I still find myself pushing A sometimes and canceling out stuff.”

This has been changed. A is now the confirm button, with B being cancel. This feels much more natural. I’m so happy this was fixed.

Another good addition is that a potion has been added that lets you travel back to your café quickly. I love this. Its nice to be able to zoom back to the café, create a recipe or change the café and then go back out into the game’s world. I do wish there was more fast travel potions or the ability to fast travel via the world map, but this change is a step in the right direction.

I did notice that the game still has pop-in and some glitches. I like what the update has added though and I will continue to play the game. I may even revisit my score. Calico is a good game and I hope more fans of simulation games check it out.

A digital code of Calico was provided by Whitehorn Digital. The update is available on Nintendo Switch right now!
