Getting the Cat Café Ready: A Look At Calico for the Nintendo Switch
Yesterday during Nintendo’s Indie World video, Calico was revealed. And this unique simulation game came out the very same day! I requested a review copy of the game and here is my first look at Calico for the Nintendo Switch.
When I was watching the Indie World video yesterday, there was one game that really jumped out at me. That game was Calico.
First of all, if you know anything about me its that I love simulation games. I’m a huge Animal Crossing fan. I also really like Harvest Moon. So simulation games? Yeah, thats my genre.
In Calico, you start the game by creating your character and then you get your café. From there you decorate the café and then go on quests. For instance, one such quest will have you using a potion to make a local animal big so you can ride it. You’ll ride it all the way to the mountains where you’ll destroy some rocks by running your big animal into them.
Wait..what?!
Calico isn’t your normal simulation game. In this game you’ll wear animals on your head, use potions to do different things, and more. The game has a quirky humor to it.
Its also a really nice looking game. Calico has a very painted look to its trees, ground, people, animals, etc.
I’m enjoying the game a lot so far.
That said, there have been a few notable issues. At least a couple of times I’ve seen characters run into other characters and get stuck on them. They just keep hitting them and can’t move away. I have also noticed that characters will block the entrance to the café and not move. This makes it impossible to enter the café!
One time it was a whole group of characters blocking the entrance. The only thing to do when this happens is save your game, quit, and then come back. The characters are now gone from the entrance.
Other than then these glitches, I have noticed a bit of pop-in of objects (like a giant cat) and the main character being able to walk through objects or animals.
Despite these issues, I am still enjoying the game so far.
I would say that my biggest complaint about the game, at the moment, is that you can’t take screenshots or capture video via the Switch’s capture button. I would love to share screenshots and video of this game on twitter!
Actually I’d love to show you my own screenshots in this preview and in the eventual review…
I hope the glitches are ironed out in an update and that screenshot/video capture is added.
Now excuse me, I need to play Calico a bunch more. Please stay tuned to GamesReviews.com for my review of this game!
Thank you to Whitehorn Digital for providing a digital code. Calico is now available on the Nintendo Switch eshop!
