PS3 overtakes 360 in Worldwide Sales
The Global Hardware Charts over at VGChartz estimates that the PS3 is now ahead of the 360 in total console sales. With 77,313,472 units sold to the 360’s 77,311,669 that puts Sony’s console in 2nd place of this generation of home consoles after 7 years of being in 3rd place.
With more than a year headstart over Sony in Europe, Microsoft launched their Xbox 360 console over 7 years ago (december ’05) and the PS3 has being playing catch-up ever since. Released in Europe in March of 2007 with a lacklustre list of launch titles and poor marketing, the PS3 struggled against the 360 giant. Many thought the PS3 was dead in the water but over the years the console has gone from strength to strength. Exclusive titles such as Uncharted, Warhawk, LittleBigPlanet, Wipeout HD, Killzone 2 and Infamous helped to get the PS3 back on its horse and back in the race. Soon after, Sony added Trophies to the system to rival the 360’s Achievement system. PS Home got off to a strong start too and was like nothing console gamers had ever seen, allowing players to interact with other gamers from around the world in a serene environment and for free. Then in June of 2010 Playstation Plus was introduced, giving gamers a chance to enjoy monthly discounts and freebies for a yearly fee. 2 years later in June of 2012 Sony launched the Instant Game Collection which provided players with excellent high quality games free of charge each month for a flat-rate subscription fee of just 49.99 euros per year.
With next-gen consoles on the horizon it’s almost poignant and poetic to see both players crossing the finish line side by side.
