What Can Games Teach You As An Adult?

It’s not hard for us to consider how video games help children. The pushback to the ‘video games cause violence’ narrative has allowed much research and many studies to be comprised in this area, and results show that video games can help developing minds think more creatively, react more quickly, and enjoy safe social spaces with their friends.

We may think of a title like Minecraft as the ultimate in careful imagination and perhaps a collaboration with friends through online faculties, and that can be an important consideration to make.

But what can games teach you as an adult? Are they still a worthwhile use of time in a constructive sense, or are they good for mere escapism? Of course, they are worthwhile, and in more ways than you may have imagined. But how are these lessons defined, and where might we find them? Obvious examples, such as new slots games at Monkey Casino allow for us to replicate real-life games with real-life results, familiarizing ourselves with monetary gaming norms. But what about the games we all know and love?

Here are our thoughts on the matter.

Problem-Solving & Lateral Thinking

Being able to think laterally and challenge yourself with puzzle titles akin to your skill level can be exhilarating. There are so many great puzzle games out there, perhaps allowing a sense of respect to the original Myst. From The Talos Principle and it’s excellent philosophical questioning and laser puzzles, to games such as Portal that make you think in three-dimensional space unlike any other way you’ve been introduced to before, relating to your environment and being able to work through tangible logic as challenge is akin to the best brain training. Not only that, but getting through a puzzle you were challenged by can be a wonderful feeling unlike no other.

Character Drama

Character drama can be worthwhile to experience, especially if it’s very well written. Enjoying a story that is handcrafted for you to experience and engaging on those terms is an amazing experience. For instance, Red Dead Redemption 2 and it’s incredible depiction of Arthur Morgan as his outlaw gang is chased across the last vestiges of the Western frontier, or Control, where you, as Jesse Faden, explore supernatural goings-on in the Oldest House, an X-Files-esque otherwordly architectural entity, both show a dedication to bringing novel stories and placing you right in them. It’s not hard how to see an amazing range of experiences like this can be so informative.

Communicative Skills

Communication is also essential when playing certain titles, of course, mainly online. Through the recent development of the Battle Royale genre, people are finding the time to ‘squad up’ now more than ever, and no matter, if Fortnite, Apex Legends, PUBG or even smaller derivative games such as the Darwin Project or Realm Royale is your personal pick, having your friends in a party and being able to call out signs or come up with tactics on the fly, can be a tonne of fun. In this way you become more confident in communicating where necessary, and for some, especially young adults, this can help grow confidence.

With this advice, we hope you can gain more value out of your chosen games.
