Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy Review
Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy is a game heavily inspired by Egyptian lore, from its story to its setting and characters. Mythology is a good source for video games, though it doesn’t always result in a good game. Is Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy good, OK, or just plain bad?
Right away, Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy drops the ball story wise. There is little to no setup as to who your main character is, who he works for, or why we should care about his quest. Instead, there are a couple of short cut scenes and then the player is thrown into an adventure. The story becomes more complicated as it goes but never gets too interesting. The characters and story are just dull. What about the game play though? Is Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy fun?
The combat in Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy is pretty basic, the platforming is a mixed bag, and while the puzzles start out easy, they quickly become too hard. After the main character gets out of the first area, there’s little to no direction as to how to solve puzzles or where the character should even go next. I found myself looking at YouTube walkthroughs a lot to progress in this game.
This isn’t a bad game though. I saw no major glitches and the game’s controls are pretty good; there’s even touch screen control for the game’s camera in handheld mode. The problem with Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy is just not that interesting. There’s nothing we haven’t seen before and done better in other games.
Sphinx jumps through all the hoops that you’d expect of a puzzle/action/platformer and doesn’t introduce anything interesting or unique. It wants to be a good game and gets pretty close to being one. I think some people will enjoy it.
If you can get past the uninspired game play and are pretty good at solving puzzles, this game might be for you. I wouldn’t expect much visually though.
Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy has very plain and dull looking environments to explore. The characters, while somewhat detailed, are totally generic. This game looks more like an early Wii game than a Nintendo Switch game. Its not the worst looking game on the Switch, but its not very impressive either.
Meanwhile, Sphinx’s music and sound effects are not bad. I did like some of the game’s tunes. I do wish the game voice acting because I think that would’ve made the sound even better.
Overall, Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy could’ve been much worse. If the game wasn’t so generic, it might be fun.
Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy isn’t a terrible game. It doesn’t have any major glitches and its controls work fine. The problem with it is that its too generic, it feels like someone just randomly took elements from Egyptian lore and threw them into action/platformer/puzzle game. If you like this sort of game, you could do worse than Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy. Of course, you could do better too.
