Original Xbox Backwards Compatibility Still Coming in 2017 – Phil Spencer
In an interview with Gamespot, head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, reconfirmed the companies commitment to launch original xbox games via backwards compatibility on the Xbox One family of systems. With the year quickly coming to a close, and little from Microsoft on the topic of original Xbox backwards compatability, it was a question that Spencer was eventually going to have to answer.
According to Spencer,
We’re close, we’re really close. I have a little dashboard I go to and I can see all the games [and] where they are in getting approvals in the pipeline. I know the games that are coming for the original Xbox but I don’t think we’ve announced them all. We have to do this in partnership with partners, but we’re still on track. I feel really good. The games look great!
With the launch of the Xbox One X on the horizon, it is understandable that most of Microsoft and Xbox’s marketing prowess has been focused solely on that launch, which has dwarfed the backwards compatibility conversation almost completely. Personally, I wouldn’t be surprised to see some type of backwards compatibility announcement come alongside the launch of the Xbox One X, or soon afterwards, while the Xbox community is enamoured by the latest technology Microsoft has to offer.
The Xbox One X is set to launch November 7th.
