Miitopia is not Tomodachi Life. That said, there are some things they have in common and of course I will be mentioning Tomodachi Life some in this review. Don’t worry though, you don’t have to play Tomoadachi Life to understand Miitopia (or vice versa). In fact, I’m not sure you can really understand Miitopia at all. Miitopia is a strange game. There are some really bizarre things here! But just because a game is bizarre, does that make it bad? Well, I assume we’ll answer that question and try to answer a few more too. Please join my party for a review of Miitopia for the Nintendo 3DS.

An evil overlord decides to start stealing faces. You must defeat enemies and get those faces back! That…is a basic “understanding” of what this game’s story is. I don’t want to spoil any plot twists for you (there are a couple at least). Nor do I want to spoil the game’s crazy and really fun dialogue. Actually I would say that the game’s dialogue was better than the story even.

There is a problem with both the story and the dialogue though. That problem is repetition. You will encounter some of the same events in the story over and over. Even worse, you’ll encounter the same dialogue over and over and over and over and over and…well you get the idea. This repetition isn’t fun but I’ll tell you what: Miitopia is worth the repeating of events and dialogue. It is so worth it. Why?? Because the story is goofy as all heck and the dialogue is just weird and will make you laugh or just keep you interested.

Every bit of repeated dialogue or events is worth it because you’ll get to the next thing that surprises you. Though, it should be pointed out that not everyone is going to like this game. Some people will just think that the story and dialogue is weird and move on. The same can be said for Miitopia’s gameplay!

Miitopia’s gameplay is a cross between Tomodachi Life, a JPRG, and Nintendo 3DS’s streetpass adventure game. Not everyone will enjoy this combination. Miitopia is a mix of genres that are all blended into some very strange, wonderful humor.

This game never takes itself seriously. You can see that in the type of enemies you run into, the interactions between your cast in and out of battle, and some of the goofy powers your party members have in battle! There is a lot to do in Miitopia, though sometimes it can feel a bit repetitive.

A lot of the dungeons and levels in Miitopia are repeated. There isn’t much variety when it comes to the levels or really even the battles. There are a bunch different types of enemies, but you can get stuck seeing the same enemies over and over. Miitopia is, without a doubt, a game you’ll want to play in small doses. Although, sometimes its hard to do so.

Miitopia’s turn-based battle system is simple but as I mentioned the powers that your party have can be surprising and funny. The interactions between characters can actually effect battles too! Miitopia is a one of a kind product. It is so odd.

But Miitopia is also fun and addictive. If you manage your adiction to playing the game a little every day, then you’ll not only extend the life of the game but extend your interest too. Thankfully, the game has wonderful controls that make the game even very pleasant.

The controls in Miitopia are really good. You can either use the touch sceen to control everything, which works really good, or the system’s buttons which also works good. The top screen and the bottom screen of the 3DS get a lot of use in this game. Miitopia is a 3DS game through and through.

And the game has very good graphics and sound too.

Miitopia takes Mii use up to the next level. The Mii creator models have never looked this good before. The graphics overall, from the world map to the dungeons and elsewhere, all look better than Tomodachi Life. I do wish there was variety in the way the INNs looked.

I also wish that so many of the dungeons and walking areas didn’t look the same. As mentioned with the gameplay, there is a lot of repetition in the graphics too. You will see a lot of the same types of areas over and over again. There is no denying, however, how good these areas look despite the repetition.

I can’t forget to mention the 3D in this game too. Miitopia looks really good in 3D. I didn’t always use the 3D but when I did, I was impressed by the amount of 3D depth in the game. There is a little bit of pop out. Miitopia looks good with the 3D on and off.

And Miitopia has a fantastic soundtrack! This game has so many different songs in it and they are mostly excellent. There is actually a place in your game menu where you can listen to all the songs you’ve heard so far. You’ll want to do that. Bonus: dancing Miis! This is a game that will continue to surprise and delight you if you are the right audience for it.

Miitopia is a very good game but its also a game that will only appeal to a certain audience. This is audience likes strange, goofy humor and doesn’t mind the game being odd on just about all levels.

The game does have really good graphics, sound, and controls too. There’s not much wrong with Miitopia expect, yes I’m going to say it again, all the repetition you’ll find in the game.

If you can embrace the oddness of Miitopia and get past the repetiion, you’ll find that Nintendo has another hit on their hands. Miitopia is a game that will give you hours and hours of fun and possibly some laughs too!

Miitopia is now available at retail stores and on the 3DS eshop.

  • Excellent graphics
  • Fantastic Sound
