Revenant Saga is rpg developer KEMCO’s newest game for the Wii U. I played this game and now I can tell you all about it! Is Revenant Saga a good rpg?

Revenant Saga’s story is sort of interesting, but it is bogged down by way too much dialogue. The characters stop and explain what’s going on in the game every five seconds. Yes, thats a bit of exaggeration, but not much of one.

There are too many cutscenes and dialogue moments in this game and not enough gameplay. The characters in the game are interesting, parts of the story are interesting, but Revenant Saga should have gone by the old ‘less is more’ saying and had some cutscenes and let the gameplay tell the rest of the story.

So how is the gameplay in Revenant Saga?

blank

The main part of the Revenant Saga’s gameplay, going from town to town, feels very stale. We’ve seen this formula a million times before. There’s nothing special or unique about the world map traveling and town visiting.

The game’s battle system is a little bit better though. It is a turn-based battle system, but a few interesting twists have been added to it such as crates to destroy in battle and random enemies that appear larger and are tougher than usual.

I did find the battle system to be a little too fast paced though. I like slower turn-based systems. Though your mileage may vary if you are one of those people who like to rush through battles. The battle system is the best part of Revenent Saga though. Its too bad the rest of the game couldn’t be as good.

Revenant Saga relies too much  on old tired and true rpg forumla and what little creativity it brings to the table is not enough. The game also doesn’t take advantage of the Wii U gamepad much. There is Off-TV Play, which is a great thing, but there is no touch screen intergration nor duel screen play (menus on one screen, gameplay on the other).

The game’s controls range from good to awkward. The battle system controls work fine, but walking around in towns and the world map seems too floaty. I also noticed when your trying to talk to someone or interact with an object that the game hesitates between button press and in-game interaction. Its a small thing but its definitly awkward.

Overall, I wouldn’t call Revenant Saga a bad game, there are some good things about it like its battle system, but Revenent Saga could have been so much better. Even the graphics and sound of Revenant Saga doesn’t seem as good as it could’ve been.

The graphics in Revenant Saga are a bit of a mixed bag. The towns, random people, dungeons, and overworld map in the game are pretty generic looking. However, the main characters are well designed and the classic models look nice. The drawn figures for dialogue boxes are very good. The best part of the graphics is also where the best part of the gameplay is: the battle system.

The 3D dimensional aspects of the battle system look really good. The close ups models of the characters are excellent. The enemies and backgrounds in the battle are again a bit generic, but not as bad as whats found outside of battle.

Revenant Saga is far from the worst looking game on the Wii U, but I wish things were a bit nicer looking outside of the main characters and battle sequences.

As for the game’s soundtrack, its not bad. Some of the music is pretty good. I’m not sure how memorable any of the music will be though. And the game’s sound effects are pretty ho-hum.

Revenant Saga is far from the worst rpg I’ve ever played, but it doesn’t quiete make the best of catogory either.

Revenant Saga is not a bad game, however its not a great one either. The game’s battle system, characters, and Off-Play are positive aspects of an overwise generic game. I feel like with a little more work this could have been a very good game. The very basic rpg forumla of going from town to town needed some twists and things needed to be a little less generic.

If you’ve never played an rpg or you are looking for a filler rpg, you could do a lot worse than Revenant Saga though. The battle system is actually pretty good. If you set your expectations a little low, you may enjoy Revenant Saga.

Thanks to KEMCO for providing a copy of this game for review. Revenant Saga is available on the Wii U eshop right now.
