Rocket League Review
Rocket League Appeal Makes this a Must Own
Games that do not require a great amount of knowledge to execute are really, REALLY fantastic. They open up video games to a much wider audience, hauling down the barriers that would otherwise prohibit someone from taking that leap of faith. These games are not bad, mind you; despite their simplicity, they generally have one, major hook: the games are easy to play, but hard to master. Rocket League is this game, and we cannot recommend it enough.
Simple Concept
It is so simple. You drive a car and use various movements to attempt and score a ball in a net. That is it. Simple? Yes. Easy to play? Yes. Hard to master? Yes. It is the PERFECT game. And despite its simplicity, I have logged hours upon hours. Consider this a sports game for people who don’t like sports. It is an arcade game for people who don’t generally like arcade games. It is unique, its inexpensive, and therefore, has tons of appeal.
If I was trying to be concise I would describe it like this: You will use what appears to be a remote control car to knock and extraordinarily large ball into and even larger goal. Basically, that’s it, although you will need to master jumps and timing to be really effective.
Offline and Online
Despite the limited modes, the game has tons of depth. You can play offline seasons, online seasons, ranked modes, and casual games. As you win games and earn experience/coins/points, you unlock upgrades for your car. While these won’t necessarily make your car better, it gives you ample customization options. I’ve spent many hours working on my car once I had unlocked a number of different parts.
As an online game (primarily, as this is where the fun will really lie) the developers have done a great job of allowing you to be unique. If you are Canadian like myself, you can express that patriotism by sporting a Canadian flag atop your antenna. Want to drive around in a Halo themed car? You can, if you own the Xbox One version of the game.
Conclusion
More content is coming to Rocket League, and even if it commands a small price, it will be more than worth it. Right now, Rocket League is taking off as an official eSport, something not many smaller titles can boast about. Rocket League can, not only because it really is a sport in-and-of-itself, but also because it has an amazing following online. If you choose to pick up Rocket League – and lets face it, you will – be ready for support long into the future. This game is just too good to not take for a spin, at least once!
